We compared the effects of plasma-treated medium (PTM) with thermal therapy on lung cancer with malignant pleural effusion (MPE). This study find out that the PTM can selectively kill lung cancer cells and the benign cells remain its viability. Besides, the thermal therapy kills both cancer cell and benign cells. We also used PTM to enhance drug uptake of the cells and combined the PTM with cancer therapy drug to further enhance the cancer cell inhibition. By investigating the reactive oxygen/nitrogen species effects on cancer cells and benign cells, we found that the short-life RONS also plays a role on selective inhibition of cancer cells but not benign cells. To enhance the short-life RONS generation, we developed Marx-generator based pulse power to increase plasma generation efficiency and used aerosol mixing to enhance the ˙OH radical generation by plasma.
