To develop a single-attosecond-pulse x-ray source, a phase-matching scheme of ion-based high-harmonic generation is proposed. It can be operated from water window to 1.5-keV x-ray. The time-dependent phase-matching condition gates the harmonic output to a single attosecond pulse. Our analysis shows that the pulse duration is as short as 50-83 attoseconds.
