Graduate Students and PostDocs Workshop: Strategies for Success

Workshop Description

  • “Are we training too many science Ph.D.s?”
  • “What are the career prospects for current graduate students/postdocs?”

These are two thought-provoking questions raised by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). According to the AAAS, the amount of biomedical science PhDs granted has doubled since the 1990s. However, in 2014, nearly 40% of Ph.D. recipients did not have job commitments upon graduation. Only 7-8% of all graduates will acquire an academic faculty position during their careers. Thus, it is imperative to do more than bench research so you will be more likely to receive a faculty position. The workshop’s main goal is advising graduate students and post-doctoral fellows essential skills necessary to become a productive and successful scientist upon graduation.
