Chen Museum

Gazing into the art works in this space is simple, just like the plain and simple me.
Viewing the space in the art works is pure, just like the inexhaustible clay.

Exhibiting works in my hometown and paying tribute to the land that nurtures me have always been an ideal I hold dear and pursue for many years. My works are pure and simple, which look into the essence of life and go back to the essentials. Similarly, having been through many years of experience, I came back to my hometown on the banks of Zhuoshui River and finished this giant piece of work—Chen Museum.

Chen Cheng-hsun graduated from the sculpture department of National Taiwan Junior Art College in 1978. In 1981, we began his studies in Spain. In 1984, he graduated from the National Madrid Ceramic School, Spain and returned to Taiwan to work as an artist. Later he won major awards in domestic and overseas competitions - the New Horizon Award in the Third Modern Art New Horizon Awards of the Republic of China at Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 1988, the Top Award in the Third Modern Sculpture Exhibition of the Republic of China at Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 1989, the Belgrade Award and collection honors in the Third International Small Ceramics Triennial of Yugoslavia in 1990, and the Honor Award in the Third International Biennial of Artistic Ceramics of Aveiro, Portugal in 1993. His works have also been collected by art museums internationally, including Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of History, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the City of Chateauroux, France, Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu, Japan, the “F. A. Grue” Ceramic Art Institute in Castelli, Italy, and the White Rabbit Gallery, Australia.

To be able to create a venue in his hometown for exhibiting his works and promoting the use of ceramics in everyday life had long been his vision. In 2016, his vision finally became reality. This is the first time the venue opens to public access, presenting functional works - from tea ware to kitchen island and sink - as well as artistic works, including two- and three-dimensional forms and outdoor installations. This exhibition is the culmination of thirty years of his artistic career.
