Ceramics Generations-Exploring Taiwan Contemporary Ceramics

Speaking of the development of Taiwan's ceramics the 1981 Chunichi Ceramic Exhibition is always referenced as an important turning point. Before that the ceramics in Taiwan was under the influence of Japanese and Chinese style brought about by the artists who traveled to Taiwan; ever since that, few ceramic artists began to create unprecedented artistic expressions.  In the 1980s as the society became more open and diverse, scholars who studied overseas returned home and started teaching at schools, and the contemporary ceramics style came in from the West. It was when Taiwan's ceramics embarked on its journey for new development.

Compared with the development of painting and sculpture, Taiwan's ceramic industry accepted the contemporary schools of thoughts at a rather late timing. The ceramic artists have higher thresholds to pass as they face the tradition and the techniques used in making ceramics. In recent years, the contemporary ceramic industry around the world has diverse environments co-existing at the same time. Under such circumstances, the various forms to present ceramics, namely the shaping and sculpting of ceramics, the concept of ceramics, the combination of compound media and technology used in ceramics become very trendy. This exhibition encompasses the pioneering ceramic artists, the active practitioners, ceramic art studios owners and artists of younger generations to showcase vertically the historical phases of ceramics in Taiwan. And in the meanwhile horizontally explores the materials used as the media for ceramic and their charms.
