Single Mode 850 nm Oxide-VCSELs with Mode Selective Filter for Extending 32 Gb/s Error-Free Transmission in OM4 fiber up to 500m
Milton Feng

Short-haul optical links based on 850 nm emission wavelength optical transceivers and multimode fibers are widely deployed in large data communication applications. However, the high speed error-free transmission distance is limited to ~ 75 m for 25 Gb/s (IEEE 802.3ba) due to the chromatic and modal dispersion in MMF. For further extend distance > 75 m, the chromatic dispersion in MMF over distance can be improved by using single-mode VCSELs. By applying mode selective filter, we have developed stable 850 nm single-mode oxide-VCSELs with ITH ~ 0.7 mA, Pout > 2.6 mW, and SMSR > 32 dB at the operating current bias I = 8 mA. The VCSELs successfully deliver 32 Gb/s error-free transmission (BER<〖10〗^(-12) with at least 10 Tb data transmitted in all testing scenarios) for up to 500 m in OM4 multimode fiber without any use of pre-emphasis or error-correction techniques.

Ultrashort and Low Insertion Loss SiGe Electroabsortion Modulators using Fast Quasiadiabatic Dynamics
Zhong-Ying Li;Hung-Ching Chung;Shuo-Yen Tseng

We use the fast quasiadiabatic dynamics to design the taper waveguide of SiGe electroabsortion modulator (EAM). In this way, we obtain a much shorter length taper for vertical coupling from silicon strip waveguide to SiGe EAMs, and much lower insertion loss from material absorption by optimizing the taper profile.

Fiber-Optic Security of Multiple Perimeter Zones by Employing a Fiber Laser Cavity in Each Defended Zone
Kung-Hua Yeh;Liang-E Chen;Likarn Wang

We propose a fiber-optic intrusion detection system for security of multiple perimeter zones. The optical configuration for the system comprises multiple sections of single-mode fibers cascaded in a line with each section containing a fiber laser cavity with a Michelson interferometer as a sensor.

Monolithic Fabrication of Optical NAND Gate Using Light-Emitting Transistors
Hsuan Han Chen;Chi Wei Wang;Chao Hsin Wu

We present a monolithically integrated optical NAND gate composed of light emitting transistors (LETs). This innovative optical NAND gate can transmit electrical and optical signals simultaneously, potentially providing more circuit capacity for data transmission and computation.

Less temperature-sensitive SWG-based silicon waveguide Bragg reflector in bulk CMOS
Yung-Jr Hung;Cheng-Tse Tang

A SWG-based cladding-modulated Bragg reflector implemented in bulk CMOS enables a lower propagation loss (< 30 dB/cm), a higher extinction ratio (24.5 dB) and a less-sensitive temperature coefficient (29.4 pm/oC) as compared to strip-based counterpart.

A fiber hydrophone by using a silicon thin-film
Teng-Lung Wang;Jia-Guan Li;Hung-Ying Chang;Ming-Yue Fu;Wen-Fung Liu

A new fiber hydrophone is proposed by using an FBG in combining a special packaging design and silicon thin-film for detecting the acoustic wave under water by means of the acoustic wave to push thin-film to cause the grating wavelength shift.
